Overview

The protein synthesis machinery in eukaryotic cells encompasses the ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum (ER), and Golgi apparatus. These organelles work in concert to synthesize, fold, modify, and transport proteins. Ribosomes translate mRNA into polypeptide chains. The rough ER, studded with ribosomes, is the primary site for synthesis of secretory and membrane-bound proteins, where protein folding and initial glycosylation occur. The Golgi apparatus receives proteins from the ER, further modifies them (particularly through glycosylation), sorts, and packages them into vesicles for delivery to their final destinations. Proper functioning of this machinery is crucial for cellular processes, and disruptions can lead to various diseases.
