COPI-mediated transport refers to the process by which proteins and lipids are shuttled between the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and the Golgi apparatus, as well as within Golgi compartments. COPI (Coat Protein Complex I) is a multi-subunit protein complex that forms a coat around vesicles responsible for this trafficking. The primary function of COPI is retrograde transport—moving materials from the cis-Golgi back to the ER—and also facilitating intra-Golgi transport.
