Overview

Protocadherin gamma subfamily A, 5 (PCDHGA5) is a member of the protocadherin gamma gene cluster, which comprises neural cadherin-like cell adhesion molecules. These proteins feature six extracellular cadherin domains, a transmembrane domain, and a conserved cytoplasmic region, forming part of the molecular mechanisms underlying the specificity of neuronal cell-cell recognition and connectivity in the central nervous system. PCDHGA5 is mainly expressed in the brain and is thought to critically contribute to the establishment and maintenance of neuronal networks, functioning as a calcium-dependent cell adhesion molecule. While mutations in this gene are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, its role has not been linked directly to drug targeting, biomarker use, or defined therapeutic safety concerns.
