Overview

ENSG00000219298, “pseudogene similar to UL16 binding protein 1 ULBP16,” is a human pseudogene located on chromosome 6. It shares sequence similarity with the functional ULBP1 gene, which encodes a stress-induced ligand for the NKG2D receptor involved in activating natural killer (NK) cells and other immune cells in response to infections and cancer. However, as a pseudogene, ULBP16 is not believed to express a functional protein. Pseudogenes are typically non-coding remnants of once-functional genes and are not considered receptors or therapeutic targets. The relevant functional homolog, ULBP1, is actively studied for its roles in immunity and as a biomarker in cancer, but ULBP16 itself has no established biological function, disease role, or clinical utility.
