The purinergic P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) is an ATP-gated ion channel. The non-functional form, abbreviated as nfP2X7, refers to a conformation or variant of the receptor that does not exhibit typical pore-forming activity in response to ATP stimulation. It is commonly found on cancer cells and may contribute to tumor survival. Antibodies have been developed that specifically recognize epitopes unique to the non-functional conformation allowing discrimination between functional and non-functional forms for research or therapeutic purposes.
