Pyridoxal phosphate phosphatase (PHOSPHO2) (PHOSPHO2)

Target
PHOSPHO2
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Phosphatase, pyridoxal phosphate phosphatase
01

Overview

Pyridoxal phosphate phosphatase (PHOSPHO2) is an enzyme that hydrolyzes pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP), the bioactive coenzyme form of vitamin B6, into pyridoxal, thus regulating the intracellular concentration of PLP. PLP is a vital cofactor required for more than 100 enzymatic reactions involved in amino acid metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis, and cellular signaling. PHOSPHO2’s function is essential for vitamin B6 homeostasis, ensuring neither excess nor deficiency of PLP, and allowing proper cellular metabolism. While PHOSPHO2 has not been directly linked to specific disease states, altered PLP regulation can be relevant to metabolic or neurological conditions. PHOSPHO2 is classified within the broader family of phosphatases and is conserved across species.

Biological functions

Regulation of intracellular pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) homeostasisCatalytic dephosphorylation of PLP (the active form of vitamin B6)Modulation of vitamin B6 metabolism
03

Disease associations

Other. No known direct implication in major diseases, but potential indirect roles in pathologies related to vitamin B6 homeostasis or rare metabolic disorders
