QKI-6 mRNA is the transcript encoding the QKI-6 isoform of the Quaking protein, a member of the Signal Transduction and Activation of RNA (STAR) family of RNA-binding proteins (UniProt: Q96PU8). This specific isoform is localized in both the nucleus and cytoplasm and plays a critical role in the central nervous system, particularly in the maturation of oligodendrocytes and the maintenance of myelin sheaths (Larocque et al., 2002, PubMed: 12147691). The protein product of QKI-6 mRNA regulates the metabolism of various target RNAs by affecting their alternative splicing, mRNA transport, and stability. Dysregulation of QKI-6 mRNA levels has been strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia, where reduced expression is observed in the prefrontal cortex (Aberg et al., 2006, PubMed: 16380931). Additionally, QKI-6 is involved in the progression of glioblastoma, often acting as a tumor suppressor whose downregulation promotes cell proliferation (Chen et al., 2012, PubMed: 22508277). As a therapeutic target, QKI-6 mRNA is being explored through RNA-based technologies such as antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) and siRNAs designed to modulate its expression or correct splicing patterns in neurological and oncological contexts. Therapeutic strategies aim to restore the balance of QKI isoforms to normalize downstream RNA processing networks.
