Reactive Oxygen Species Generation (upon Light Activation)

Overview

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated upon light activation through various mechanisms in both photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic cells. In photosynthetic organisms, high-intensity light or UV radiation leads to electron leakage in the photosynthetic electron transport chain, resulting in the formation of superoxide radicals and other ROS. In non-photosynthetic cells, visible or near-infrared light exposure can cause mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes to leak electrons, leading to superoxide formation. UV irradiation can also induce ROS generation by affecting enzymes like catalase and upregulating nitric oxide synthase synthesis. Light-induced ROS can act as signaling molecules, modulating cellular pathways, but excessive accumulation leads to oxidative damage affecting lipids, proteins, DNA, and organelles. Key enzymes involved include NADPH oxidases, components of the mitochondrial electron transport chain, and photosystems I and II.
