Overview

Red blood cells (erythrocytes) and blood components encompass the diverse cellular and proteinaceous elements of the circulatory system, including platelets, leukocytes, and plasma. Erythrocytes are specialized for gas exchange, using hemoglobin to transport oxygen from the lungs to peripheral tissues and return carbon dioxide (StatPearls, 2023). Platelets and plasma-derived coagulation factors are essential for hemostasis, forming clots to prevent blood loss following vascular injury (NIH, 2022). This target is considered incorrect in a strict molecular sense because it represents a complex tissue or cell population rather than a single protein or receptor. However, it is the focus of numerous therapies, ranging from erythropoietin-stimulating agents for anemia to antiplatelet drugs for cardiovascular disease (PubMed, 2021). Pathologies involving these components include sickle cell disease, malaria, and various coagulopathies, making their regulation a cornerstone of hematology and transfusion medicine.

Mechanism of action

Drugs modulate blood components by binding to specific intracellular or surface proteins; for instance, hydroxyurea increases fetal hemoglobin levels in RBCs, while anticoagulants like heparin activate antithrombin III to neutralize clotting factors in the plasma (StatPearls, 2023; PubMed, 2021).
