Overview

Mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent stromal cells capable of differentiating into various lineages, such as bone and cartilage, while secreting immunomodulatory factors that facilitate tissue repair (Pittenger et al., 1999; Dominici et al., 2006). Endothelial cells are essential for the formation of new blood vessels, a process known as angiogenesis, which is vital for restoring blood supply to damaged tissues (Carmeliet, 2000). Chondrocytes and tenocytes are specialized cells responsible for maintaining the structural integrity of cartilage and tendons, respectively, and are primary targets for treating degenerative musculoskeletal conditions (Archer & Francis-West, 2003; Sharma & Maffulli, 2005). While these cells are not individual molecular targets like receptors or enzymes, they are manipulated via growth factors, scaffolds, or direct transplantation to restore physiological function. Therapeutic interventions often involve the use of signaling molecules like bone morphogenetic protein-2 or platelet-rich plasma to stimulate these cell populations (NIH, 2023).
