Overview

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), subgroup A, strain A2 is a specific isolate of the human respiratory syncytial virus that serves as the primary laboratory model for studying RSV pathogenesis and developing therapeutics (MDPI, 2021; ATCC). It is an enveloped, negative-sense, single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Pneumoviridae family (NIH, 2025). The virus targets the respiratory epithelium, where it causes cell fusion (syncytia formation), leading to airway obstruction, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia, particularly in infants and immunocompromised adults (NIH, 2025; MDPI, 2021). Key therapeutic targets within the virus include the fusion (F) protein, which mediates viral entry, and the attachment (G) protein (NIH, 2025; NIH, 2013). Current pharmacological interventions include monoclonal antibodies like palivizumab and nirsevimab that neutralize the F protein, as well as broad-spectrum antivirals like ribavirin that inhibit viral RNA synthesis (Pharmacy Times, 2024; NIH, 2025). Strain A2 is particularly significant in drug discovery as the reference strain for evaluating the efficacy of fusion inhibitors and vaccine candidates (MDPI, 2021).
