The fusion (F) glycoprotein of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a type I viral fusion protein located on the surface of the virion. It plays a critical role in mediating the fusion of the viral envelope with host cell membranes, enabling viral entry and infection. The prefusion conformation is metastable and represents the form present before membrane fusion occurs. The prefusion conformation exposes unique antigenic sites not present or less accessible in postfusion form, which are the target of potent neutralizing antibodies.
