The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) fusion glycoprotein F is a class I viral fusion protein essential for RSV entry into host cells. It mediates the fusion of the viral envelope with the host cell membrane, allowing viral RNA to enter and initiate infection. The F protein exists in two major conformations: prefusion (pre-F) and postfusion (post-F). The prefusion conformation is present on the surface of infectious virions before membrane fusion occurs and is highly immunogenic. Stabilized versions of pre-F are leading candidates for next-generation RSV vaccines due to their ability to elicit strong neutralizing responses.
