Retinal Tissue

Molecular classification
Tissue, Sensory tissue, Neural tissue, Vascular tissue
01

Overview

Retinal tissue, composed of neural and vascular elements, is the target of laser photocoagulation. This procedure aims to treat various retinal diseases by creating controlled thermal burns that induce scarring, seal leaking blood vessels, destroy abnormal new vessel growth, and stabilize the retina. The goal is to prevent further vision loss, although some degree of collateral damage to healthy tissue is possible.

Other names
RetinaRetinal pigment epithelium (RPE)PhotoreceptorsRetinal vasculature
02

Mechanism of action

Laser photocoagulation induces thermal damage to retinal tissue, leading to coagulation, scarring, and destruction of abnormal vessels or sealing of retinal breaks.

Interacting drugs

Anti-VEGF agents (e.g., bevacizumab, ranibizumab, aflibercept) - Note: these are often used in conjunction with or as alternatives to laser photocoagulation
