Overview

Retinal rod rhodopsin-sensitive cGMP 3',5'-cyclic phosphodiesterase subunit gamma (PDE6G) is a regulatory subunit of the rod-specific cyclic GMP phosphodiesterase complex in photoreceptor cells. It is essential for the transmission and amplification of the visual signal in rod cells. The gamma subunit modulates the activity of the alpha and beta catalytic subunits within this phosphodiesterase complex and regulates hydrolysis of cGMP, a key step in phototransduction. Mutations in PDE6G are implicated in inherited retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa[1][2][3][4][6].
