Overview

Retinoic acid receptor beta and retinoic acid receptor gamma are ligand-activated nuclear receptors encoded by the RARB and RARG genes, respectively. They function as transcription factors that heterodimerize with retinoid X receptors (RXRs) to bind DNA at retinoic acid response elements, regulating gene expression in response to retinoic acid. These receptors are critical in cell differentiation, morphogenesis, development, and tissue homeostasis. RAR-beta and RAR-gamma display distinct transcriptional activities, with RAR-gamma specifically implicated as a key mediator of the clinical and pharmacological effects of certain retinoids such as adapalene. Alterations in their activity or expression are implicated in cancer and various developmental disorders[1][2][3][4][5][6].
