HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) is a key enzyme encoded by the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), essential for viral replication. It catalyzes the conversion of the single-stranded viral RNA genome into double-stranded DNA, a process known as reverse transcription. RT has two main enzymatic activities: RNA-dependent DNA polymerase activity and Ribonuclease H (RNase H) activity. It is a major drug target in antiretroviral therapy for HIV/AIDS.
Inhibition of reverse transcriptase activity, either by causing chain termination during DNA synthesis or by directly blocking its active site.
