RNA, 5.8S ribosomal pseudogene 5 (RNA5-8SP5; also called RN5-8S5) is a non-coding RNA pseudogene that originates from the ribosomal 5.8S RNA gene family[2][5]. Pseudogenes such as RNA5-8SP5 result from gene duplication or related mutational events, but have lost the capacity to encode functional RNA due to disabling sequence changes[3]. As a pseudogene, RNA5-8SP5 is generally not transcribed—or if transcribed, its RNA does not have a known function. There is no evidence for involvement of this locus or its potential transcripts in any biological process, disease, or therapeutic targeting[2][5]. Pseudogenes of this family are common in eukaryotic genomes and are considered a form of "junk" DNA, accumulating over evolutionary time as a byproduct of gene duplication and concerted evolution of ribosomal RNA genes[3]. Unlike functional ribosomal RNA genes, this pseudogene is neither a receptor, enzyme, transporter, transcription factor, nor any kind of canonical drug target[2][5].
