RNA, 5.8S ribosomal pseudogene 6 (RNA5-8SP6) is a pseudogene, meaning it is a nonfunctional segment of DNA resembling the 5.8S ribosomal RNA gene. Pseudogenes arise through duplication or retrotransposition events followed by disabling mutations that render them nonfunctional. RNA5-8SP6 is not transcribed into a functional RNA necessary for ribosome assembly and has no direct role in protein synthesis or cellular biology. Such pseudogenes are common in the genome, especially within multigene families like ribosomal RNA genes. They do not encode proteins or structural RNAs, nor do they serve as therapeutic targets, though in some contexts, ribosomal RNA gene pseudogenes can serve as markers in taxonomy or evolutionary studies, and pseudogenes in general may occasionally regulate other genes through noncoding RNA pathways.
