RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 156 (RNA5SP156) is a processed pseudogene classified and approved by the HUGO Gene Nomenclature Committee. It is a non-coding genomic sequence derived from the duplication or retrotransposition of a functional 5S ribosomal RNA gene but carries mutations or lacks the necessary regulatory sequences to encode a functional 5S rRNA molecule. 5S rRNA itself is an essential component of the large ribosomal subunit and plays an important role in ribosome structure and function, but pseudogenes such as RNA5SP156 do not contribute to ribosome biogenesis or protein synthesis. They are generally considered biologically neutral, although, in rare cases, some pseudogenes may be transcribed or have regulatory roles in the genome, but there is no evidence for such a role for RNA5SP156.
