RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 158 (RNA5SP158) is an annotated human pseudogene related in sequence to the 5S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene. The functional 5S rRNA is a highly conserved, approximately 120-nucleotide non-coding RNA component of the large ribosomal subunit critical for ribosome structural integrity and function in protein synthesis. RNA5SP158, however, is a non-coding pseudogene: it does not code for a functional 5S rRNA molecule. While some pseudogenes are occasionally transcribed and a fraction may be translated to short peptides, there is no evidence that RNA5SP158 has any biological or pathological significance, druggability, or is used as a diagnostic biomarker. Its primary significance lies in genomics research as a marker of evolutionary history and gene family expansion rather than as a molecular target.
