RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 175 (RNA5SP175) is classified as a processed pseudogene of the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family. Pseudogenes are sequences that originate from known genes but have accumulated mutations that render them non-functional—they are typically non-coding and do not produce a functional RNA or protein product. 5S rRNA itself plays a central structural and functional role in the ribosome, facilitating the assembly and operation of ribosomal subunits necessary for protein synthesis in living cells. However, as a pseudogene, RNA5SP175 does not contribute to ribosome function or cellular translation. It is not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or any conventional drug target, nor does it serve as a biomarker or interact with known drugs. There is no evidence that RNA5SP175 has disease associations or biological activity. Its presence reflects the evolutionary history of the 5S rRNA gene family and the common occurrence of non-functional rRNA gene copies (pseudogenes) in eukaryotic genomes.
