RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 186 (RNA5SP186) is a processed pseudogene derived from the 5S ribosomal RNA (5S rRNA) gene family[2][5]. Unlike functional 5S rRNA genes, which encode an essential structural component of the large ribosomal subunit, RNA5SP186 does not produce a functional RNA product due to disabling mutations or loss of regulatory elements necessary for expression[4][5]. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP186 are generally regarded as non-functional genomic elements, remnants of gene duplication or retrotransposition events, and do not encode proteins or functional RNAs[4]. There is currently no evidence that RNA5SP186 plays a direct biological role, serves as a therapeutic target, or is associated with drug interactions, specific molecular mechanisms of action, or disease biomarker properties[2][5]. Its classification as a pseudogene means it is typically excluded from therapeutic target lists and is not relevant for drug discovery or safety consideration. In rare cases, certain pseudogenes can acquire regulatory functions, but there are no reports indicating this for RNA5SP186[6].
