Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 190 is a pseudogene derived from the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family. Pseudogenes are genomic DNA sequences resembling functional genes but are typically nonfunctional due to mutations, truncations, or lack of regulatory elements required for normal expression and translation[2][4]. The parental 5S ribosomal RNA gene is responsible for encoding 5S rRNA, a core structural component of the large ribosomal subunit facilitating protein synthesis in all domains of life[1][3]. Pseudogene variants like RNA5SP190 are usually not translated into protein nor incorporated into ribosomal complexes; however, some pseudogenes may have regulatory roles at the RNA level, such as acting as competitive endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) for microRNAs, participating in chromatin regulation, or producing noncoding RNAs with epigenetic effects[2][4]. For RNA5SP190 specifically, there is no evidence in the literature of it encoding a functional protein or being involved directly in signaling, drug targeting, or pathophysiology. Its mention in scientific databases is primarily for genome annotation completeness, tracking pseudogene evolution, and distinguishing nonfunctional paralogs from active genes.

Disease associations

No direct evidence for RNA5SP190 itself in disease from current resultsIn general, pseudogenes may be implicated in cancer (as biomarkers or regulators)Other roles for pseudogenes in disease (e.g., modulation of immune response, developmental disorders) remain largely theoretical for this specific pseudogene
