RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 20 is a processed pseudogene derived from the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family on human chromosome 1p31.1[2][3]. Processed pseudogenes arise via retrotransposition of mRNA transcripts, lack introns and canonical regulatory elements, are generally non-protein-coding, and often accumulate mutations that render them non-functional[1][3][5]. While some pseudogenes can produce RNA transcripts that regulate parent gene expression through antisense interference or siRNA production, RNA5SP20 itself has not been described as functional in these processes[1][6]. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP20 primarily serve as molecular fossils of gene duplication and retrotransposition events and are classified under junk DNA, although they may rarely acquire regulatory roles[1][4][5]. RNA5SP20 is not a therapeutic target in medicine and does not interact directly with drugs or serve as a biomarker.
