RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 217 (RNA5SP217) is a processed pseudogene in the human genome that closely resembles functional 5S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, yet lacks the capacity to produce functional RNA due to mutations or loss of regulatory elements. As part of a large family of ribosomal RNA pseudogenes, RNA5SP217 is classified as an rRNA pseudogene and does not contribute to ribosome assembly, protein synthesis, or regulatory functions performed by functional ribosomal RNA genes. It is not associated with disease, drug targeting, or clinical disease markers, and is annotated as a "pseudogene" in human genome databases. Pseudogenes such as RNA5SP217 can arise via DNA duplication or retrotransposition but generally have lost their original gene function due to mutations; they are not transcribed into functional RNA or protein in most contexts, though rare exceptions exist for other pseudogenes. 5S rRNA pseudogenes are distinguished from true 5S rRNA genes, which are essential for the ribosome and protein synthesis.
