RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 221 (RNA5SP221) is an rRNA pseudogene that shares sequence similarity with functional 5S ribosomal RNA genes but does not produce a functional RNA product. While 5S ribosomal RNA forms a critical part of the large ribosomal subunit and is vital for ribosome structure and function, RNA5SP221 has lost this capability due to mutations or genomic rearrangements, classifying it as a pseudogene. These sequences are generally transcriptionally silent and not translated into protein, although rare instances of pseudogene transcription or translation have been observed for other pseudogenes. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP221 do not have a known physiological function and are not considered therapeutic targets. No established interactions with drugs, no role as a disease biomarker, and no associated safety or efficacy concerns have been reported for this pseudogene. Pseudogenes can sometimes play roles in gene regulation, serve as evolutionary markers, or be implicated in cancer or other diseases, but there is no evidence of such a role for RNA5SP221.
