RNA5SP225 is an annotated pseudogene derived from the 5S ribosomal RNA family. The canonical 5S rRNA is a 120-nucleotide component of the large ribosomal subunit, essential for ribosomal structural integrity and protein synthesis[5][3][1]. However, RNA5SP225, as a pseudogene, is marked by sequence similarity to functional 5S rRNA genes but lacks coding or structural function. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP225 are common in mammalian genomes and often arise from gene duplication or reverse transcription followed by mutation and loss of function[6]. There is no evidence of RNA5SP225 being transcriptionally active or having regulatory roles, unlike some transcribed pseudogenes such as RPSAP52, which may have oncogenic properties[2]. Accordingly, RNA5SP225 is generally regarded as a nonfunctional genomic element and is not considered a drug target or biomarker.
