RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 233 (RNA5SP233) is a genomic locus annotated based on sequence similarity to the functional 5S ribosomal RNA gene, which is a critical RNA component of the large ribosomal subunit and participates in ribosome structure and assembly. However, as a pseudogene, RNA5SP233 is rendered nonfunctional due to accumulated mutations; unlike the canonical 5S rRNA, it is not transcribed into a functional RNA molecule, and does not contribute to ribosomal function or protein synthesis. Pseudogenes such as RNA5SP233 typically result from the duplication of functional genes followed by disabling mutations, and are prevalent throughout the genome. They are generally not considered biological targets, do not serve established physiological or pathophysiological roles, and are not known to interact with any drugs. If a therapeutic or research interest focuses on ribosomal function, the true target is the functional 5S ribosomal RNA, not its pseudogenes. Pseudogenes may, in rare cases, complicate molecular biology assays due to sequence similarity with functioning genes, but themselves are not targets for direct therapeutic intervention.
