Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 246 (RNA5SP246) is a noncoding RNA pseudogene that shares sequence homology with functional 5S ribosomal RNA genes but lacks coding potential due to mutations or deletions. Pseudogenes of the 5S rRNA family arise from duplication events and accumulate mutations that render them nonfunctional. Unlike functional 5S rRNA, which is an essential component of the ribosome and participates in protein synthesis, RNA5SP246 is not incorporated into ribosomes and does not play a role in ribosomal structure or function. Pseudogenes can sometimes exert regulatory effects at the RNA level, such as silent competition for regulatory factors, but there is no evidence to suggest any biological activity or therapeutic relevance for RNA5SP246 specifically. This entity is not considered a valid therapeutic target and is primarily annotated in genomic databases as a reference pseudogene.

Mechanism of action

none applicable (Since it is not a functional target, there is no mechanism of action for drugs)

03

Biological functions

Most pseudogenes are nonfunctional remnants of genes and do not have biological functions comparable to their parental (functional) genes. However, as a pseudogene, it may theoretically engage in regulatory interactions such as microRNA decoy activities, competing for RNA-binding proteins, or possible generation of noncoding RNAs, but this is not documented for RNA5SP246 specifically.
04

Disease associations

Pseudogenes in general have been implicated in cancer and gene regulation, but there is no evidence for a direct disease role for RNA5SP246.
