Functional 5S rRNA genes encode a small ribosomal RNA component essential for ribosome assembly and protein synthesis, but this specific locus is a pseudogene: it contains sequence similarity to the parental 5S rRNA gene but harbors mutations or rearrangements that prevent its expression as a functional RNA or protein product.
