RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 278 (RNA5SP278) is a non-coding pseudogene in the human genome that is homologous to the gene encoding 5S ribosomal RNA (rRNA), but it is not transcribed into a functional ribosomal RNA molecule[1][2]. Unlike functional rRNA genes, pseudogenes such as RNA5SP278 are considered non-functional remnants of gene duplication or retrotransposition events[4]. They are characterized by sequences similar to those of active rRNA genes but contain mutations or truncations that prevent their function in ribosome biogenesis. Therefore, RNA5SP278 does not participate in ribosome assembly, protein synthesis, or any canonical cellular function associated with ribosomal RNAs[1][4]. While some pseudogenes can influence gene regulation through RNA interference or as competitive endogenous RNAs, there is no published evidence that RNA5SP278 has such a regulatory role[8]. It is not considered a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or factor, but rather a genetic artifact annotated for genomic reference[1][2]. If a true ribosomal target is desired, the appropriate entry would be "5S ribosomal RNA" (not pseudogene)[3][5].
