RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 28 (RNA5SP28) is a genomic DNA segment derived from the 5S ribosomal RNA gene, displaying high sequence similarity to functional 5S rRNA genes but lacking the capability to encode a mature, functional ribosomal RNA due to mutations or truncations[6]. The 5S ribosomal RNA is an essential component of the ribosome, involved in protein synthesis and ribosomal structure[1][3][5][7], but numerous related pseudogenes, such as RNA5SP28, exist throughout the human genome where they serve no direct coding function[6][7]. Pseudogenes may occasionally be transcribed, and rare examples have been implicated in gene regulation via RNA interference mechanisms or small regulatory RNAs, but there is no evidence that RNA5SP28 participates in these roles[4]. It is not considered a therapeutic target (receptor, enzyme, transporter, etc.), nor is there literature indicating involvement in disease processes, drug interactions, or biomarker applications. Its presence instead reflects genomic evolutionary history and gene duplication events in ribosomal RNA gene clusters.
