Target intelligence / Profile preview
RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 282 (RNA5SP282) is a human pseudogene that is a nonfunctional copy of the 5S ribosomal RNA gene. Unlike functional 5S rRNA genes, which encode a component of the large ribosomal subunit and are involved in protein synthesis, RNA5SP282 does not produce a functional RNA and is generally considered to lack biological function. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP282 may occasionally be transcribed, and research suggests that some pseudogenes can act as noncoding regulatory RNAs, potentially influencing gene expression indirectly, but no such function has been established for RNA5SP282. It is neither a therapeutic target nor a known biomarker. Pseudogenes result from retrotransposition or duplication events and typically contain mutations that prevent normal transcription or processing. Recent studies suggest pseudogene expression profiling may have value in cancer biomarker discovery, yet RNA5SP282 itself is not documented in such functional roles. No known protein, peptide, or drug interaction is attributable to this pseudogene. RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 282 is not a drug target, does not encode a functional molecule, and should not be considered for therapeutic targeting. Its inclusion as a target is likely based on a misunderstanding, as it is a transcriptionally silent or noncoding locus without direct biological function.
