Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 293 (RNA5SP293) is a human genomic locus transcribed as a non-coding RNA, annotated as a pseudogene related to the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family[2][5]. As a pseudogene, RNA5SP293 contains sequence similarity to functional 5S rRNA genes but is believed to lack protein-coding capability and ribosomal function due to disabling mutations or truncations[4][5]. It is not a protein, enzyme, receptor, or therapeutic target. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP293 do not serve canonical cellular functions attributed to their archetype rRNA genes (such as participating in ribosome structure or activity)[4]. However, emerging research demonstrates that, while individual pseudogenes like RNA5SP293 do not have a direct biochemical or signaling role, patterns of pseudogene expression—including members of the 5S rRNA pseudogene family—may correlate with molecular subtypes of cancer, prognosis, and possibly other disease-relevant states[6]. Thus, their expression can be useful in systems-level molecular profiling and may serve as potential biomarkers, but RNA5SP293 itself is not a recognized molecular target for therapeutic action, nor does it play a direct role in normal biology or disease mechanism[6]. RNA5SP293’s only established role is as a molecular “footprint”—a proxy for broader transcriptional regulatory phenomena involving pseudogenes and non-coding RNAs in complex conditions such as cancer.
