Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 297 (RNA5SP297) is a processed rRNA pseudogene related to the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family. 5S rRNA genes encode an essential component of the large ribosomal subunit, participating in ribosome assembly and function in all domains of life except some mitochondria. However, pseudogenes such as RNA5SP297 are historically considered non-functional, arising from duplication or retrotransposition events and accumulating mutations that prevent them from producing functional RNA or protein. Recent studies have proposed that some pseudogenes may have regulatory functions—such as acting as microRNA decoys, sources of small regulatory RNAs, or antisense regulators—but these functions are most often attributed collectively to classes of pseudogenes, not to individual ones. There is no evidence to support RNA5SP297 as a therapeutic target, biomarker, or disease gene. This is a non-coding, non-functional pseudogene and does not fit the criteria of a druggable therapeutic target. It is not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or signaling protein. There is some emerging interest in pseudogene expression profiles for cancer subtyping and prognosis, but this is a class effect and not unique to RNA5SP297. No drugs or drug mechanisms are associated with this molecule. If you are seeking a therapeutic target, this entry should be flagged as incorrect or non-relevant for that context.

Biological functions

Possible involvement as regulatory non-coding RNA (e.g., potential to function as an RNA decoy or source of regulatory small RNAs, but most are considered non-functional)
03

Disease associations

Potential biomarker roles in cancer stratification and molecular profiling when considering pseudogene expression signatures globallyNo known direct disease-causing or modifying role for this specific pseudogene
04

Biomarkers

Pseudogene expression (in aggregate) can serve as a molecular profiling tool in oncology, but no evidence supports RNA5SP297 individually as a biomarker
