RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 322 is a processed pseudogene of the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family. 5S rRNA is a component of the large ribosomal subunit essential for protein synthesis. As a pseudogene, RNA5SP322 arose via gene duplication or retrotransposition but has acquired mutations or lacks regulatory elements needed for proper function; thus, it does not produce a functional RNA or protein product in the cell. Unlike active 5S rRNA genes, which are transcribed and participate in the ribosome, pseudogenes like RNA5SP322 are generally transcriptionally silent and biologically inert, though some pseudogenes have been implicated in gene regulation or disease when transcribed, typically as non-coding RNAs. No evidence supports such a function for RNA5SP322.
