Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 357 (RNA5SP357) is a non-coding pseudogene corresponding to 5S ribosomal RNA genes. 5S rRNA is a small structural and functional component of the large ribosomal subunit, but pseudogenes such as RNA5SP357 are non-functional genomic copies that do not produce active rRNA. Pseudogenes may arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events. While ribosomal pseudogenes are generally non-expressed and lack protein-coding potential, some pseudogene transcripts in the human genome have been implicated in gene expression regulation by acting as competing endogenous RNAs or miRNA decoys. There is no evidence that RNA5SP357 encodes a receptor, enzyme, drug target, or clinically relevant biomarker. The molecule is primarily of interest for pseudogene expression studies in genomics and molecular evolution[3][4][8][2].

Biological functions

No direct biological function; generally classified as non-functional, but pseudogene transcripts may have regulatory or competing endogenous RNA activity in rare contexts
03

Disease associations

Potential association of pseudogene transcripts with cancer (as biomarkers), immune modulation, or interferon regulation in certain contexts, but no direct, characterized disease role for RNA5SP357 itself
04

Biomarkers

Pseudogenes as a class are emerging as expression-based biomarkers in oncology, but RNA5SP357 is not established as one
