Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 361 (RNA5SP361) is a human processed pseudogene related to the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family[2][4]. By definition, processed pseudogenes originate by retrotransposition of mRNA transcripts, resulting in DNA sequences that typically lack introns and can be integrated at new genomic loci[4]. They usually lack promoters and are not efficiently transcribed or translated into functional molecules. Most pseudogenes, including RNA5SP361, do not encode proteins or functional RNAs and are not involved in classical molecular signaling, transport, or enzymatic activities, but global pseudogene expression patterns can serve as biomarkers in fields such as cancer research[6]. There is no evidence that RNA5SP361 is itself a therapeutic target or has clinical relevance as an individual entity.

Biological functions

Pseudogenes themselves typically do not encode functional proteins but can sometimes participate in regulatory networks, for instance, as sources of regulatory RNAs or competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA)
03

Disease associations

While many pseudogenes can be differentially expressed in diseases such as cancer and influence gene regulatory networks, there is no direct evidence that this specific pseudogene (RNA5SP361) has a defined disease mechanism.
04

Biomarkers

Pseudogene expression profiles (in aggregate) are emerging as molecular biomarkers, especially in cancer classification. No evidence for RNA5SP361 specifically.
