It is homologous to the 5S ribosomal RNA gene, which encodes an essential non-coding RNA component of the large ribosomal subunit. Unlike the functional 5S rRNA, RNA5SP362 does not produce a mature 5S rRNA or participate in ribosome assembly or protein synthesis. Processed pseudogenes like RNA5SP362 are typically generated by reverse transcription of mRNA and subsequent reintegration into the genome without the necessary regulatory sequences or intronic structure. There is no evidence that RNA5SP362 is translated into a protein or acts as a molecular target for drugs. Its functional relevance in gene regulation or disease processes remains undemonstrated.
