RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 374 (RNA5SP374) is a human pseudogene related to the 5S ribosomal RNA gene. Pseudogenes arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and accumulate mutations impairing their ability to encode a functional RNA or protein. The original 5S ribosomal RNA is an integral part of the ribosomal large subunit, participating in ribosome structure and function, but RNA5SP374 is non-functional and does not contribute to ribosome activity. While pseudogenes can contribute to gene regulation in some contexts—for example, by acting as competing endogenous RNAs—no direct biological role or disease association is established for RNA5SP374 specifically. Pseudogene expression profiling in cancer research highlights the biomarker and regulatory potential of certain pseudogenes, but this is not established for RNA5SP374 itself.
