Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 379 (RNA5SP379) is a non-protein-coding rRNA pseudogene, meaning it is a DNA sequence similar to the functional gene for 5S ribosomal RNA, but has accumulated mutations or structural changes that prevent it from producing functional 5S rRNA[2][4]. The 5S rRNA molecule, which the parent gene codes for, is a ~120-nucleotide component of the large ribosomal subunit in eukaryotes, and is vital for ribosome structure and function[1][3]. However, as a pseudogene, RNA5SP379 is not transcribed (or if transcribed, its RNA is non-functional), is not a part of the ribosome, and does not have a known biological function or established role as a druggable therapeutic target. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP379 are found throughout the genome and can sometimes act as molecular markers for evolutionary studies or, rarely, as regulatory RNAs, but there is no specific evidence linking RNA5SP379 to any biological pathway, disease, or direct clinical utility[4][6].

Biological functions

Pseudogenes are typically non-functional remnants of genes and do not encode functional productsMay sometimes be transcribed, but do not produce a functional ribosomal RNA
03

Disease associations

“Other”—Some pseudogenes, when expressed, have been implicated in cancer and may serve as molecular biomarkers in specific contexts, but direct roles for individual 5S rRNA pseudogenes like this one are generally unclear or not established

Biomarkers

Potential biomarker: Pseudogene expression profiles (as a class, not specifically for RNA5SP379) are emerging as potential biomarkers in cancer research
