Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 397 (RNA5SP397) is a *processed pseudogene* in the human genome[2][1]. It is derived from the 5S ribosomal RNA gene, which codes for a highly conserved structural RNA involved in the large subunit of ribosomes in all cellular life forms[3][5][7]. As a pseudogene, RNA5SP397 lacks the ability to code for functional RNA or protein, and generally arises through retrotransposition or duplication events that result in mutations rendering the sequence nonfunctional[4]. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP397 are not considered therapeutic targets and do not have drug interactions, known diagnostic biomarker roles, or mechanism-of-action relevance in pharmacology. While there is emerging interest in the role of some pseudogenes in regulating gene expression and contributing to disease pathways through non-coding RNA functions[6], there is no evidence that this particular pseudogene functions as a disease gene or biomarker. Its classification as a pseudogene and absence of protein product or direct function makes this target *incorrect or inapplicable* as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other drug target[2][1][4].

Biological functions

May participate in gene regulation as a pseudogene; does not have a known direct biological function as it is not a protein-coding gene or active RNA
03

Disease associations

Other (pseudogene expression in general can be linked to cancer and other diseases but no specific evidence for this individual pseudogene)
