RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 415 is a non-coding pseudogene identified in the human genome and is homologous to canonical 5S ribosomal RNA genes, but harbors disabling mutations or sequence changes that prevent it from producing functional 5S rRNA for ribosome assembly. As a pseudogene, it does not encode a functional RNA or protein product, though some pseudogenes have been implicated in gene regulation through mechanisms such as acting as competing endogenous RNAs or generating regulatory small RNAs. No evidence currently supports this locus as a direct therapeutic target, nor are there known drugs or biomarkers associated with it. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP415 arise from duplication or retrotransposition of functional genes (here, the 5S rRNA gene), but accumulate disabling mutations, typically rendering them non-functional at the RNA or protein level. Some transcribed pseudogenes may regulate gene expression indirectly, for example by competing for microRNAs; however, there is no specific evidence that RNA5SP415 acts in this way. 5S ribosomal RNA itself is an essential component of the large ribosomal subunit, vital to ribosome structure and function, but pseudogenes lack this fundamental activity. RNA5SP415 is classified as a non-coding RNA pseudogene, more specifically as an "rRNA_pseudogene" per GENCODE/Ensembl terminology. There are no clinical, pharmacological, or biomarker roles for RNA5SP415 and it is not relevant as a therapeutic target; its main significance is for genomic annotation and studies of pseudogene function or evolution.
