RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 42 (RNA5SP42)

Target
RNA5SP42
Molecular classification
Other (pseudogene), Processed pseudogene derived from 5S rRNA
01

Overview

RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 42 (RNA5SP42, also known as RN5S42), is a nonfunctional genomic element classified as a processed pseudogene related to the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family. Pseudogenes like RNA5SP42 have sequence similarity to their functional counterparts (here, the 5S rRNA gene) but harbor mutations or regulatory sequence losses that prevent normal transcription or translation. Most pseudogenes, including RNA5SP42, do not code for functional protein or RNA and do not participate in cellular processes. While some pseudogenes have been implicated in gene regulation or disease under select conditions, there is no evidence that RNA5SP42 has any such role.

02

Mechanism of action

None. No drugs or interventions target this pseudogene; it produces no protein and is not involved in any cellular signaling or metabolic pathway.

03

Biological functions

None. Pseudogenes typically lack biological function due to accumulated mutations and loss of regulatory elements
04

Disease associations

Other. Most pseudogenes, including RNA5SP42, do not have well-established roles in disease, but in some cases, pseudogenes can be transcribed and may exert regulatory effects as long noncoding RNAs or by competing for miRNAs. There is no evidence RNA5SP42 specifically has such a role.
05

Safety considerations

None. As a nonfunctional pseudogene, it poses no known risk or therapeutic challenge.
06

Interacting drugs

None. There are no drugs known to interact with this pseudogene, nor is it a target of current therapeutics.
07

Biomarkers

None. No current evidence suggests this pseudogene is used as a biomarker for disease diagnosis or therapy monitoring.
