RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 428 (RNA5SP428) is a human pseudogene corresponding to the 5S ribosomal RNA class, as listed in gene databases[2]. The “pseudogene” designation indicates it is a nonfunctional genomic segment similar in sequence to functional 5S rRNA genes but mutated or modified so it does not produce a functional RNA product or protein. It is not part of the ribosome and does not participate in ribosomal assembly or function. Most pseudogenes, including RNA5SP428, do not encode functional products, though in rare cases, some pseudogenes can play regulatory roles (e.g., acting as competing endogenous RNAs or microRNA sponges)[4]. There is currently no evidence that RNA5SP428 is therapeutically actionable, a disease biomarker, or a target for any known drug. Furthermore, its annotation as a pseudogene means it is not considered a bona fide molecular "target" such as a receptor, ion channel, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor[2][4]. RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 428 should not be confused with functional 5S ribosomal RNA, which is an essential structural and functional RNA component of the ribosome[1][3].
