It is classified as a 5S ribosomal RNA-related pseudogene, meaning it is a DNA sequence similar to the functional 5S ribosomal RNA gene but rendered inactive by mutations or lack of necessary regulatory elements. Pseudogenes are typically categorized as unitary, unprocessed, or processed, with RNA5SP437 likely fitting the processed pseudogene category due to its formation via retrotransposition. While some pseudogenes may play roles in regulating gene networks or disease processes, there is no evidence that RNA5SP437 is a functional molecule, disease biomarker, or therapeutic target. Unlike the canonical 5S rRNA, which is essential for ribosome assembly and protein synthesis, RNA5SP437 does not encode an active RNA and does not participate in known cellular functions.
