The functional 5S rRNA is an essential component of the large subunit of the ribosome, crucial for ribosomal structure and the coordination of translation[1][3]. However, pseudogenes like RNA5SP451 lack the functional capacity of their parent RNA genes—most cannot produce the RNA or protein products required for biological activity, usually due to mutations or a lack of promoter/regulatory sequences[2][3]. Most pseudogenes are not expressed or have no known physiological function, though in rare cases some pseudogenes may participate in gene regulation as competing endogenous RNAs; there is no evidence to suggest RNA5SP451 has such a function[2][4]. Because RNA5SP451 is not a protein, not a receptor, enzyme, or transporter, and lacks evidence of functional roles or disease association, it is not considered a therapeutic target and should not be used as such in drug discovery or clinical contexts.
