RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 461 (RNA5SP461) is a human pseudogene related to the 5S ribosomal RNA gene family. Pseudogenes are non-functional sequences that arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition and typically acquire disabling mutations that prevent them from producing functional RNA or protein products[4]. The 5S ribosomal RNA is a structural component of the ribosome crucial for protein synthesis[1][3][5], but as a pseudogene, RNA5SP461 is not incorporated into ribosomes and does not contribute to ribosomal function. Pseudogenes generally do not serve as therapeutic targets, but some may influence gene regulation as noncoding RNAs or act as miRNA decoys, impacting disease processes in a minority of cases, which has not been specifically established for RNA5SP461[8].
