RNA, 5S ribosomal pseudogene 487 (RNA5SP487) is a member of the large family of 5S ribosomal RNA gene-related pseudogenes found throughout eukaryotic genomes[2]. While functional 5S rRNA genes are essential components of the large ribosomal subunit and participate in ribosomal assembly and protein synthesis, the pseudogene versions such as RNA5SP487 have lost function due to mutations, truncations, or other genomic alterations, and no longer produce active rRNA[1][3]. These sequences persist as non-coding elements, often used as evolutionary markers but rarely associated with direct biological activity or disease. RNA5SP487 is not considered a therapeutic target or receptor, transporter, enzyme, or transcription factor, and does not interact with drugs or serve as a diagnostic or therapeutic biomarker. Its presence in the genome reflects gene duplication and subsequent non-functionalization, a common evolutionary process[2].
